FELL IN LOVE WITH IGUANAS
FELL IN LOVE WITH IGUANAS
BY DHRUV PATEL
First and foremost, I want to emphasise that animals are incredible, and working with them brings us joy every time. We work with a variety of exotic species, including reptiles, birds, monkeys, mammals, and insects. The day begins early with serving soft food (sprouts, veggies) to a variety of birds, followed by a fruit feed in the late morning, and then a mixed seed feed in the afternoon. We feed all nocturnal species in the evening. After cleaning and disinfecting food vessels, it is necessary to rearrange them for the following day. In between chores, I take care of enclosure cleaning, nesting-box maintenance, bedding, and all necessary comfort required for species that are breeding.
Appropriate sleep and resting are also important for them. I think If you want to understand animals, the only way to do so is to observe them; you will know about their likes and dislikes, and you will begin to understand them first-hand. I also help with the treatment of any animal that is sick or unwell, can tell if an animal is sick by looking at its poop!

I began interacting by feeding leafy vegetables and hibiscus flowers on a regular basis. Generally, the diet of a green iguana should consist of more leafy veggies and fewer vegetables, with the occasional flower and fruit. I began approaching the iguanas in an attempt to befriend them, and I had some success. When I first started working with them, one of the males was very aggressive, but now he lets me touch and scratch him. I think he likes it! I discovered that he enjoys having mist sprayed on his head, so I began doing it more frequently, gradually gaining his trust. He now
realizes that I mean no harm and only want to shower him with more love. I believe you must tune in with them in order to truly enjoy working with them.
